Since we have lived on the east coast, fall has quickly become my favorite season. The leaves! Oh my, I love the colors! Plus the humidity dies a little and the temperatures are somewhat bearable. I do have to say that I like to shovel snow more than I like raking leaves. No critters jump out of snow when you shovel. But, when you rake leaves, you just never know what is going to spring on you. Gross.
We have a great back yard and we put the boys to work :)
I LOVE going to the pumpkin patch every year! It really brings out the country girl in me and helps me get back to my roots :) Hayrides and pumpkins and apple cider doughnuts..what could be better?!
The boys wanted really big pumpkins to carve. Jack did his entirely on his own. It is fun to see how capable a five year old is...and a little scary when his capabilities involve a tiny little saw.
Jack and Luke insisted that we all dress up as super heroes this year. I was a little bummed. I really wanted to be Mary Poppins and make all the boys be chimney sweeps. Cute, huh? I think my days of choosing all the costumes are over. They have opinions now. Sigh.
Could the babies be any cuter with these little capes!?
I love all my super heroes. Glad I'm well protected :)

Year Voldemort
We made it. We survived Year Voldemort....or the Year That Must Not Be Named. Today the babies turn One! I can't tell if that year was the fastest year ever, or if it went excruciatingly slow. Either way, we did it! What an exhausting, fabulous, emotional, and beautiful year it was. It was probably my favorite year, but I never, ever, ever....ever, want to do it again.
A year ago today was probably the scariest day of my life. I was nervous to have twins, but to have them 12 weeks early, was almost more than I could handle. Honestly, I felt a little robbed of the experience. I didn't get to be so humongous that people thought I was going to explode (my body is thankful for that, but my brain is still grumpy), I didn't get to hold my babies after they were born, I didn't get newborn pictures of them, I didn't get to bring them home for months, I didn't get to take them out and show them off, no one could visit them or meet them....I really, really struggled with all of these things. I put on a brave face, because that's what you do, but I really had a very long mourning process for the things I felt that we missed out on. There was a day, maybe two weeks after they were born, that I crawled into my closet, shut the door, and sobbed, for at least an hour. I sobbed while I prayed for them, I sobbed while I grieved what should have been, and I sobbed for how selfish I felt. During my sobfest, I prayed for strength, I bartered my own health for theirs, I made promises of eternal obedience if they would just be okay, and I prayed to know what on Earth I was supposed to learn.
I can happily say, that in my closet that day, I was sent comfort and peace. I didn't know what Tripp and Charlie's outcomes would be. I didn't know if they would live long enough for me to raise them, or to take them to soccer games, or go to their science fairs, or send them on missions, or watch them graduate college, but I knew at that moment, that they were mine, and always would be.
I prayed and prayed to know what I needed to learn from this experience, and today, I can tell you that I am truly grateful for the trials that were sent and for the amazing things I have learned about myself, and more importantly, about our Savior.
1. The first thing I learned was how to accept help. I like to do things myself. My own way. My own timing. Suddenly, I couldn't lift anything, drive anywhere, watch my older children, or even make myself a sandwich. I am so grateful for everyone who has lent a hand, an ear, a dinner, and countless other services over the past year. I am truly blessed and amazed at the generosity and mercy of many of those around me. People truly are wonderful and kind.
2. The second important lesson I learned is that my trials are minimal. There are plenty of people around me that have and are going through so much more than I could even imagine. Their strength has been an inspiration to me. Their attitudes have been something I have tried to emulate. No matter what difficult thing happens, someone else is going through something harder .
3. I learned about a hundred other lessons, but I feel the most important thing I learned was how to identify with Heavenly Father, and how to more deeply understand what Jesus Christ went through. Heavenly Father sent his precious son to Earth to be sacrificed for the rest of us. To atone for our sins. It had to be done. There wasn't another way for all of His children to return to Him. Heavenly Father knew that Jesus would suffer. He had to watch it all be done, and not interfere. It must have been excruciating to watch His child go through something so awful.
When I knew the babies were coming, I knew there was nothing I could do. It was awful to feel so helpless. The first time I saw them, I only got to look at them through the glass of their little isolettes where their tiny bodies lay fighting for every breath. I couldn't stop any of their pain, or their struggles. I couldn't hold them and kiss them. I couldn't do anything but whisper to them and tell them that I was there. I prayed they would have comfort, but that was as much as I could do. Heavenly Father's love for us and His desire to be with us again after this life must be so great. It is something that is so dear to me. I am so grateful for my Savior who made it possible for me to return to my Father in Heaven, along with my precious, sweet family.
Looking back at the last year, I realize how incredibly blessed we have been. Our babies are healthy. They are happy. They are full of mischief. They bring us constant joy. I can't imagine not having them in our family. They really have such a beautiful bond. They needed to come from heaven together. They are such special boys. I can't wait to see what they accomplish. They are strong. They are courageous. They are an unstoppable force. And they have our whole family wrapped around their darling little fingers. Happy Birthday, Tripp and Charlie!

Deep Thoughts: By Jack Durrant
Jack is probably the funniest person I have ever met. I like to think he gets it from me, but unfortunately Jay is really funny too, so I may not be able to take credit for it. These are a few from the past year that I have been collecting.
"I love church, it makes me feel warm and comfy."
"So, Elizabeth, are we gonna kiss, or what?" (This was said while I was babysitting some other kids. I had already talked to him about being too young to kiss, but I said when he was older, he could ask her. Apparently older is 5 minutes later.)
"Did you know that babies can't get into trouble? They can't fight or hit or bite. Except those babies in the country. I bet the country babies give their moms a hard time".
"That beetle that I caught tasted gross. Don't worry. I didn't eat it."
"When are those babies going to learn to take care of themselves?"
"Mom, it looks like you could use a Mountain Dew."
"Mom, I liked it better when you weren't fat." (I was pregnant with the twins)
"Mom, you are way prettier than Wendy Peffercorn."
"I'm the best green champion. But this green champion needs to go pee."
"Mom, I'm going to marry you because you are the best girl. Unless I find a girl with really beautiful, long hair."
"I am drawing a Chinese zombie, because they are the scariest."
"I'm building a hydraulic, electronic spaceship." (Where did he learn the word hydraulic?!)
Me: "Jack, how was school?"
Jack: "Fine. Can we talk about this later?"
Me: "You always say that and then you never tell me about it"
Jack: "I know. That's my trick."
Me: "Okay, everyone out! I need to change."
Jack: "Come on, Dad. We better leave before you see mom naked. That would be REALLY weird."
"Does my wiener actually have a bone in it?" (Oh.my.gosh. This one killed me. Gotta love body questions!)
"Mom, would you please come take care of your babies? I can't do everything myself."

Why Can't They Stay Little Forever?
A few weeks ago I spilled water on our laptop. I managed to fry the entire computer and destroy every picture we have taken for the past 3 years. That's right. THREE years. Now before you lecture me on backing things up...it was on my to do list. My to do list that has been ignored for the past year. Sigh. So, thank goodness I have kept a blog and have a few pictures of our kids. I am devastated. If you have any pictures of my kids, send 'em over. And pray for our computer genius friend trying to recover any data he can from our old computer.
Luckily Maryland has had a cooler summer than usual. (So I've heard. It still feels hotter than ever if you ask me.) We have enjoyed a few rainy days. The fun thing about rain here that doesn't happen in Colorado, is that the rain is warm! It kind of feels like a hot shower. However, it doesn't make it cooler outside. Just more muggy and disgusting.
I love this picture. Mirror image :) I will put the babies in front of a mirror and they will giggle and reach out to their reflection. I'm not sure that they understand that it is them yet, and not the other twin :) I am amazed at how connected they are. It is almost like they think the other one is part of them, like an extra appendage or something.
Jay and I got to go on a real live date last week!! We went to a wedding and I got to wear a pretty dress and everything! It was like heaven! Then I spilled red sauce on my dress and didn't have any of my kids around to blame :) Thanks to our friends, Jen and V, for braving our busy brood for the night :)
I never wanted twins. Now that I have them, I would never want one at a time again. It is so fun to get to the cute stages and get to see it twice! Charlie has been on solids for a few months. Tripp was resistant and did not want any part of it. I had an occupational therapist come check him out to make sure his oral motor skills were ok. (Being tube fed for so long can cause some food and eating aversions.) She came and he showed off and ate like a champ. I swear he stuck his tongue out at me and giggled. He is fine and eating like crazy.
Charlie's steroids cleared up his GI issues and also really enhanced his performance levels. The kid is crawling everywhere, pulling up on things, climbing over everything, and getting hurt left and right by falling. He's a menace.
Tripp is happy to hang out on his blanket and chew on things. His motivation to move is not quite the same. Finally. I got a lazy one. YES!
Jack started Kindergarten today. He was pretty nervous to go. We pulled up to the school and he asked if he could sit in the car with me where it was quiet for just a few more minutes. I started crying like an idiot and now I'm sure he is going to get made fun of for having such a bawl bag mom.
It has been 5 hours and I am missing him like crazy. He has been my constant companion for 5 years. I feel a little naked. Like I forgot to wear a shirt today. I think he took a little part of my heart to school. He is such a great kid and I'm so proud of who he is growing up to be. He is going to love school. And I am going to survive :)
Luke was really sad when I came home without Jack. To make ourselves feel better, we tagged along with our friends to the farm. It was a great distraction.

Frankenbaby
It is about 214 degrees in Maryland today with at least 400% humidity, so we are hiding in our cave house, with the lights off and the blinds shut. I think I used to enjoy the summer heat more when I was a teenager and could lounge around at the pool all day slathering myself in baby oil. Now I'm 30, my wrinkles are getting worse, I'm pretty sure I already have skin cancer (no joke, I have an appt. with the dermatologist next week), and it terrifies me to take my kids to the pool by myself. How am I supposed to keep 4 kids from drowning all at once? No thanks. I keep telling myself that my kids are having a great childhood, but I guess we will see what their therapist says when they are 30.
Tripp and Charlie had their 9 month appointment this week! Can you believe it? They have been such happy little things. I almost don't remember the months they were in the NICU. Did that actually happen? Tripp has gone from 2 lb. 9 oz. and 15.5 in. long to 15 lb. 8 oz. and 26 in.! Charlie started at 2 lb. 6 oz and 15 in. and is now 14 lb. 9 oz. and 26.5 in.! I kind of miss their itty bitty squirrely selves :)
Charlie is still having some issues with colitis from his milk allergy, so he got to meet the president of the University of Maryland Baltimore this week! He is a pediatric gastroenterologist that still practices while he runs the University. Impressive! Charlie has about 3 more weeks to clear up his problems (with the help of massive amounts of steroids) or he has to have a couple of scopes done. Poor kid.
And Tripp sure caused quite the stir this week. He had to have an EEG yesterday to rule out the possibility of seizures. He was so brave and cooperative! The technician got him done in an hour which is unheard of. I was so proud :) He was so cute and helpless attached to wires and wrapped in gauze. He looked like a mini Frankenstein. I spent most of the week worried and scared, and we heard today that everything came back completely normal! Whew! I love news like that :)
He has a little tumor by his eye that the Dr. is watching, but other than that, he is doing great!
If you haven't met the babies yet, I'm sorry. I'm pretty sure they have hit their peak cuteness. They couldn't possibly get cuter.
The big boys continue to help me each day. Jack entertains the babies, cleans up their spit-up, and makes sure they don't swallow legos. Tripp is still his favorite, but Charlie is quickly catching up :)
Jay and Luke are getting pretty inseparable. Soon, all the boys will be going camping with dad, and I will be left out feeling sorry for myself. Yeah right. I will be at the spa getting a massage and then going shoe shopping!
Our one picture from the 4th of July. The babies are terrified of loud noises, so we put the kids to bed early and cleaned our carpets. I know. We are the epitome of fun. But, we are realistic in our 4th of July capabilities :)
We were supposed to get the huge brood of cicadas. We waited and waited and waited and they never came. I hate bugs, so I was pleased. We found one regular annual cicada. The boys loved it! I let it stay in the bug jar on the counter for 1/2 day, then I made them let it go.
My mad Stackadoo building skillz.
The babies have a new skill, too! They can hold their own bottles! I can't believe how much I am loving this! They will only eat lying on the floor, so my back was getting pretty hunched leaning over them all day long. Now, they are happily independent, and I am happy looking less like Quasimodo each day.
My sister sent these onesies for the babies :) I thought it was appropriate that they came while I was working on my blog :)
